Dune Hybrid Wedge
I’ll tell you more about Jeff and his brainchild in a moment.

First, a quick introduction.

I’m Andrew Knack, founder of Golf Knack. I started the company to fill a void created by the big equipment brands, who build clubs primarily for tour pros – which leaves regular golfers like you out in the cold.

Jeff Halstead knows this as well as anyone.

So whenever Jeff calls me with a new concept, I’m all ears.

More often than not, I’m blown away.

I have to be honest, though.
When Jeff started describing the Dune Wedge, I… well…

I had no idea what to think. 

Jeff tried his best to paint me a picture.

“Imagine the clubhead of a hybrid,” he said.

“Got it,” I replied.

“Now give it the loft of a sand wedge,” Jeff continued.

“Um… OK,” I said, already struggling with the visual.

“The sole on this thing is three inches deep,” Jeff went on, his voice full of enthusiasm, “and has channels from front to back.”

“Sounds interesting,” I said, trying to hide my bewilderment.

Jeff plowed ahead, explaining in great detail how the hybrid-style clubhead would make the Dune more  forgiving and easier to hit than any wedge on the market. 

By the time he told me about the club’s  massive sweet spot,  graphite shaft and “re-directional” hosel…
My brain was spinning like a top.

But my faith in Jeff is unwavering. He’s left me scratching my head before – and I’ve always ended up shaking his hand.

So I put aside my misgivings and gave him the green light to develop the Dune Wedge.

Still, I needed to see the Dune in action before putting it into production.
Amateur testing would determine its fate.

Among other questions, we needed to know:
  • Would the golfers get decent results when they hit behind the ball?
  • Could they execute the delicate pitch shots that are nearly impossible with a conventional wedge?
  • Would they be able to play these shots with a simple, back-and-through swing (like hitting a putt)?
  • Could the Dune perform well from both tight lies and gnarly rough? 
  • Would the club’s decidedly unconventional appearance be a deal-breaking turnoff?
In a nutshell, it boiled down to this:

The Dune Wedge had to provide instant, easy and significant improvement over the golfers’ traditional wedges.

And if it didn’t?

It was back to the drawing board.

Now, you’ve probably gathered that the Dune Wedge made the grade. 

The only way to understand how thoroughly it crushed the competition, though, is to hear from the golfers themselves.

Talk about blown away.

“Holy cow,” marveled David Alvarado, a high-teens handicapper, after a few tries with the Dune.

“This club is making me look good, man!”

Rob Kaufman, a 10 handicap, was surprised at how quickly the Dune brought improvement.

“Any time you use a first-time club, it’s trial and error,” he said. With the Dune, he added while admiring his results, “ There was no error.”

Then there was John Petrilli, whose handicap had slipped from 9 to near 30 as his age advanced and his short game declined. 

“I’m confident it’ll be a game changer for me,” he beamed, “and… 

“I’ll never fear a chip again.”

Never. Fear. A chip. Again.

Imagine that.

See, the whole idea was to build a club that wouldn’t punish recreational golfers for their shortcomings – the 180-degree opposite of traditional wedges.

For instance, if you have a tendency to:
  • “Flip” the club or try to “scoop” the ball at impact… The Dune’s extra-wide, “Slide-X Sole” will glide across the ground rather than bouncing, creating solid contact rather than a chunk or skull.
  • Hit your chips and pitch shots too low… The Dune’s down-and-deep center of gravity adds effective loft for a high, soft carry.
  • Miss the sweet spot and come up short… The Dune’s hollow, hybrid-style clubhead is far more forgiving than any traditional wedge, so even your miss-hits will get to the hole.
  • Suffer from poor alignment and accuracy around the greens… The Dune’s center-line alignment stripe makes aiming a cinch. Just point it at the target and swing away.
  • Get hung up in the rough… The Dune’s specially designed hosel prevents grass from grabbing and twisting the clubhead, while the extremely stable clubhead slips right through.

1. Ultra-wide “Slide X Sole” glides across the turf – and never, ever digs

A whopping three inches deep at its widest point, the Dune’s sole is also marked with a series of front-to-back channels.

The effect is a club that simply will not snag or dig into the turf – period. Which means no more fat shots – ever.

Patrick Smith, a 20 handicap who tested the wedge, was more than impressed.
“With the Dune, one thing that was out of my mind was chunking the (ball), which I’m always thinking of when I use my 56-degree or my regular pitching wedge,” he said. 

“I felt like I could trust the ground and use the ground with this.”

Added 30 handicapper John Petrilli, “The hybrid effect allows me to hit six inches behind the ball and still glide through it.”

2. “Hybrid Synergy Weighting” gets the ball up effortlessly

There’s a reason the conventional wedge’s center of gravity (CG) isn’t as far back as the Dune’s:

On a conventional wedge, there’s literally no wedge there.

By using a hybrid-shaped head, Jeff Halstead was able to push the CG to where no CG has gone before.
That makes it unbelievably easy to get the ball up in the air from any lie – without opening the clubface even a smidgen.

Rob Kaufman, a 10 handicapper, was astounded by the Dune’s simplicity.

“With my club, I’ve got to twist my wrists and do what I can to pop the ball up in the air,” he said. “(With the Dune) you don’t have to. It just popped up automatically. I didn’t have to try – it just did it.”

3. Minimal offset helps you nip the ball off the tightest lies

Compared to most wedges, the Dune has very little offset. (That is, the leading edge isn’t set back from the front of the hosel.)

I’ll let Jeff explain what that does:

“With the leading edge closer to center of the hosel, it’s easier to find bottom of your swing and have the club go under the ball. It also promotes more of a back-and-through, putting-type motion so it’s easier to repeat consistently.”
Believe it or not, there’s actually more innovative features built into the Dune Wedge. 

And every last one of them contributes something to the bottom line:

What really convinced me, though, was watching other golfers try it out.

They gathered on a sparkling day at McCormick Ranch Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.

There wasn’t a ringer among the group of 10, whose handicaps ranged from 8 to 30.

Several named the short game as their biggest weakness. As a group, they exhibited the usual flaws. 

Some tried to help the ball into the air with the upper body. Some “flipped” the hands at impact. Inconsistent ball position and uncertainty on where to land the ball were common themes.

For the test, we put them in difficult but not impossible spots, often with the green sloping away. 

They’d need a soft touch to get close.

Each golfer started by playing several shots with his own wedge, then switched to the Dune. We told them to try the Dune using an arms-and-shoulders, putting-style motion.

The results followed a remarkably steady pattern. It went something like this:

Golfer with own wedge: Thin and long… fat and short… fat, thin… wide of target... (With a solid shot or two sprinkled in.)

Golfer with Dune Wedge (his first time using it): Solid contact but a little short or long… closer… closer… really close… 

Their reactions were consistent, too.

“With my typical club, I have to be cautious of my setup, my balance and so forth and so on,” said 8 handicap Mike Snyder. “With the Dune, I just set up naturally and swing. The club just did all the work. 

“I just used a simple putting stroke and the rest was all handled by the Dune.”

Patrick Smith, a 20, agreed wholeheartedly.  

“With the Dune, it just slides and glides right across the grass, pops it right up into the air,” he said. “The chunking, that mental aspect of it is not even in my mind anymore.” 

Then there was John Petrilli, who once carried a sporty 9 handicap. Now age 72, however, that’s crept up to 30 – due in part to his faltering short game.
